I watched 34 movies of 2019 and 23 of them were in theatres.

My top favourite movies of 2019 are as follows.

This is the first post on my new website* and it’s already over a year late. (Yes Doc, I have no concept of time). In fact these days when I think or say “last year”, I still mean 2019.

The year 2020 felt like it was never going to end and when it actually did, it felt like it went by so fast or the memories somewhat aren’t long term or rather they are warped that it doesn’t register as last year anymore.

I was hoping to watch more movies during December 2019 but I was dealing with a personal crisis and had to seek out help. So this list kept getting pushed. In early 2020 I was looking forward to Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite being released in theatres in India but it didn’t make it to my city in Mangalore. I still haven’t gotten around to watching it. Despite the lockdown and being indoors I didn’t watch many movies in general in 2020.

Avengers: Endgame will likely remain the best theatrical cinema experience of my life for a long time. Over a decade of storytelling by Marvel Studios paid off in such grand ways while doing justice to the core characters. It was gripping, exhilarating, and filled with moments that got me teary eyed. It was a bitter sweet experience which I didn’t want to end but was glad to see the closure the characters deserved.

I saw Avengers: Endgame twice back-to-back on April 26, 2019. I caught the first morning show at the Prabhath Cinema and the next at PVR Cinemas in Mangalore. The intensity and anticipation among the crowd made me feel like there was electric current in the air, it was infectious. I feel like I will not experience anything remote to that feeling in a theatre ever again. During 2020 and now in 2021 I watched many videos of the audience reaction to key moments from the film on YouTube and they still give me goosebumps.

  1. Yep, me too 🙂 . Thanks for sharing my level of enthusiasm that week and for making the effort to secure the needed tickets when we were facing sold out screenings everywhere.
